Research trip to Nepal and Sikkim, December 15 – January 12, 2014
January 28, 2014
Last fall I started to intensively work on my new documentary project "Where are you?" about digital communication, and booked a ticket to Kathmandu, Nepal.
Then headed east to Darjeeling, where I found my first main protagonist Lama Tenzing, a buddhist monk from Bhutia Busty Monastery. Fortunately we became friends within days - my daily 5k run around his temple complex seemed to impress him a bit.
Got introduced to Dharmesh Lama Yonzon, a local Sherpa with a keen mind. For 10 days we travelled Sikkim together, visiting monasteries like Pemayangtse, Lachung or Rumtek, embedded into the breathtaking Himalaya environment. At Gangtok I was lucky to get one of the very rare permits to visit North Sikkim close to the Tibetan border, which gave me the possibility to capture amazing interviews with impressively wise Lamas and Rinpoches. And to be the first person ever who had permission to film inside Lachung monastery temple.
A road trip to Bodhgaya finished the journey. During our 4 day's stay, Karma Sherap from Mirik monastery gave me a deep insight in contemporary buddhism. I met His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
